Amber Calderon-Bugarin
Program Director: Civic Center Region & Girls in the Game Initiative
Amber grew up in the LA area and began playing soccer at age four. She still plays recreationally today. After earning a BA in kinesiology from USF, she joined SCORES as a program coordinator in 2018. In 2021, she was promoted to program director overseeing the Civic Center region. After helping to develop and run the SCORES Selecta Girls Summer camp (which debuted in 2021), Amber was also named program director for SCORES’ Girls in the Game initiative, which focuses on bringing gender equity to the soccer pitch.
Amber feels especially privileged to be teaching poetry. “The students get to figure out who they are through another form of expression,” she says. “They make themselves vulnerable and share with me who they are. It’s amazing.”
In her free time, Amber loves to cook for family and friends, including her husband Kevin Calderon, a fellow SCORES staff member. “I’m half Mexican and half Filipino. My parents taught me how important it is to stay rooted in who you are through taste and what you eat. Cooking is about about filling up people you love with good things.” Alongside her work, Amber is pursuing a master’s degree at SF State in dietetics and nutrition at SF State.
