Program Coordinator

Born in Mexico, Azariel Diaz moved to San Francisco as a toddler and attended SFUSD schools through high school: Alvarado, Horace Mann, and Galileo. Azariel played soccer and wrote poetry as SCORES student at Alvarado for three years. He loved it, discovering a passion for soccer inspired in part by his coach (and now SCORES colleague) Genaro "Junior" Arana. The mix of poetry and soccer was new, and the blend fueled a desire to express himself through writing.

In 2016, his godmother invited him to join her in working for ExCEL as a SCORES coach at Sanchez Elementary (and later Sunnyside). Azariel had come full circle, and when offered a larger role in 2018 as a SCORES program coordinator in San Francisco, he was thrilled.

In his free time, Azariel studies the martial arts Muay Thai and Brazilian Jujutsu (he’s going for his black belt).
