Serena Sanchez/Program Coordinator in Oakland

Serena Sanchez grew up in Los Angeles, the only member of a Mexican-Native American family not enthralled by baseball—her mother even worked for the Dodgers. But when she discovered soccer at age 8 through a friend from a soccer-loving family, Serena knew she’d found her game. She thrived on the soccer field, playing in both rec and club leagues.

After graduating from UCLA in 2019, Serena intended to go to law school, drawn to family law. But two factors changed her mind: a stint working in a law firm and seeing high school friend Amber helping run a SCORES summer camp in the Civic Center of San Francisco. Serena saw an opportunity to refocus her interests in helping kids and families through sports and the nonprofit world. Not long after, she joined LA SCORES as a volunteer and then paid staffer. When she got the opportunity to move to Bay Area SCORES, she jumped.

Now a program coordinator in Oakland, Serena’s works with three girls teams in both soccer and poetry.  In her spare time, she loves to explore the food scene in San Francisco.
